Welcome to 8 months.
Yup. 8 months has gone by since that fateful day I pleaded with my child to hurry up and get here already. And again I plead. Sleep. Please. Mom is tired. Falling asleep at the wheel tired.
I know I've mentioned Lucas's tiny-ness many times, but it's official folks. He's been diagnosed as Failure to Thrive. (Sad emoticon).
The thing is that he looks (other than the Skeletor thing) the picture of health. He's got no weird symptoms. Nothing at all to indicate that something might be wrong... except the fact that he was a mere 13 pounds even at his 7.5 month weight check. **HEAVY SIGH**
So, we went on Tuesday and enjoyed ourselves some testing. Testing for things like Cystic Fibrosis, Celiac disease, Renal Tubular Acidosis, and lots more. The good news is that it's none of those things that are causing him to be so skinny. However, we did receive results that his thyroid levels are "slightly low". We've been referred to a Pediatric Endocrinologist. We have an appointment on the 19th.
But in the meantime... about Lucas at 8 months old.
*LOVES his big sisters. Smiles as soon as they enter a room.
*thoroughly enjoys food. will grab at anything you try to eat.
*pulls up to standing. sometimes tries to let go and stand unassisted.
*has two teeth on the bottom.
*very attached to Mom. whines anytime I leave the room.
*does not sleep through the night. wakes up at least once. usually more.
I seriously can't believe it's been 8 months see this little man entered our lives. It has flown. And while I miss my newborn Lucas, I really love his emerging personality.

He's a cute little bugger! And keep us posted on the endocrinologist appt.
He looks like he's thriving to me! Good luck with the docs. With any luck, the problem is that he needs more chocolate and ice cream to fatten him up :-). I wish that was my problem.
Oh, that makes me sad. I have tiny babies that can't keep themselves on the charts, but I have never had a diagnosis of Failure to Thrive. I hope he just has mega-metabolism. He is crazy-cute.
Oh, I'm sorry about the FTT! In all his pictures he does look happy and healthy. I agree with pps: keep us posted!
How sweet he is!!
I know a couple moms who've had their kids diagnosed with Failure to Thrive and I have to say, that is the most outdated, negative way to diagnose a poor baby. In this day and age we can't come up with any wording better than THAT? He certainly looks all happy and thrivey. :o)
Good luck with the endocrinologist. Keep us updated, for sure.
No fun! I went through all that testing myself as a kid. I was five before they made up a diagnosis for me and left me alone. I hope they convince themselves that he's just going to be small sooner than that! Also that you don't have to put him on the gross diet Ethan ate. So much fat!
I'm sorry you have to go through all this! I have to tell you I've been there.
My oldest was a small guy-around
5th percentile for much of his babyhood and todlerhood-now at 7 he is in the 80th percentile for BMI and pretty much even steven with the other kids his age.
My youngest also underwent all the testing about a year and a half ago because he wasn't gaining weight and he had some serious recurring diahhrea. They even did a gene screen because we have some CF in the family. But he only had one of the gene mutations(you need two) They did one of the tests twice and both times found some slightly elevated levels of amino acids which can be a marker for metabolic diseases. our pediatric GI guy was going to schedule an appointment with a metabolic specialist in Philly just to be safe- But he never really did and I never really pressed the issue because our JJ finally started gaining a little more weight and growing and because the kid is a freaking monkey full of energy and happy all the time and the gi stuff has mostly resolved itself. He'll be three next month and only weighs around 26 or 27 lbs. But he is just about as tall as the other kids his age.I try to remind myself that some of those Percentiles must be alittle skewed because there are some real chunkers these days! Some kids are just built differently.
Wow that was really long.Your little guy is adorable and I wish you the best of luck with all this. I might add that your kind of a little gal yourself you know!
What a cutie. And like I've said, I hope you get quick answers.
He's soooo cute! Good luck w/ your appointments. I agree w/ Lost a Sock;0) He does look thrivey and very, very happy.
Failure to Thrive kids ROCK!
no, really, I'm sorry. Hugs and stuff. at least you have a freaking cute kid as consolation, right?
