What's Going Down

Hi! and Thanks!

Welcome to everyone who might be filing in here via Ucreate or CraftersFileBox or any of the other awesome blogs who are featuring my Valentines from last year. Totally didn't expect all the link love. Fun times!

I promised the closet transformation.
You recall the before:

Let me add that this was after I'd removed ALL their toys, shoes, and sorted out everything that was non-fitting.
First things first: Remove those hideous wood-colored bi-fold doors! BUH-BYE!
We removed the wire shelving (which will probably go up in the garage), puttied, painted the closet and trim (just white), and installed these shelves.

Ta-Da! Everything fits. Now I'm comtemplating whether to put a curtain on it. Any thoughts?

Ooh, yeah, a curtain would be awesome! Fun bright fabric, totally easy and then your piles wouldn't have to be perfect all the time.

Yeah I like the curtain idea. . . BUT

You cannot give away those shutters! You hate those SHUTTERS? Seriously? Do you have any idea how many people are looking for sweet smokin' shutters like that? The possibilities. . .

So cute!!1 Look at all the hard work you did! Are you trying to get the baby to come out sooner? Also, I think curtains would be super cute!

oh, it looks so good! i love an organized closet.

totally do the curtain.

love the organization!

i put curtains on my girls' toy closet. it helps to avoid finger pinches... and broken doors for when they run the wooden play push cart into it and break it. allegedly.

I actually was going to email you and ask if you mind if I posted and linked to your fabulous valentines again. Seriously. Best things ever. I've already got mine done and ordered because I was so excited to do them.

Remember me know that you're famous, K?

I'd vote curtain. It looks fabulous?

looks messier than it did before. Why not more baskets rather than hap hazardly folded and stacked clothes?

Cover it up with a curtain. I wouldnt want to look at that mess all day either.

Why do people insist on leaving rude comments anonymously? Baskets would be neater but so would drawers. Since we're on a pretty tight budget, those things will have to wait.

Yeah, rude and cowardly person that left that comment. They obviously didn't take the time to note that you were trying to fit the contents of a dresser into your closet-and I THINK it looks great and now you have all that space for your new little one. I would say yes to the curtains-it might be fun to let the girls help you pick out the fabric. And PS I love the valentine idea too...you always have such cute creative things like that on your blog.

So jealous - it looks great! I like the shutter doors too, but can totally see the potential for finger mashing and I greatly dislike when they get off track...hmmm. But little boys like to hang and swing on curtains too soooo IDK.

And as for mr./ms./mrs. anonymous - it's customary to end your rude remarks with a little something that hints at sarcasm... otherwise it's just, well RUDE!

Ah, the reveal! It looks fabulous! I want to redo my closet. Well, I want YOU to redo my closet. You do want that baby out soon, right? :)

What the heck Anonymous. I have to say that in the past few months I have been astonished at the rude and unnecessary comments left by people on personal blogs. You should be really ashamed of yourself.

That aside.....

I think the shelving looks great. I'm amazed that it fits so perfectly in the closet. I am NOT a DYI girl and am always impressed with what all you crafty girls can do. I vote for a cute curtain, especially since you're such a fabulous sewer and can whip one together that would make Pottery Barn shoppers drool.

And I *think* Mandi is begging for the shutters. Maybe a good birthday gift for her?

I just found your blog via Ucreate, and I've already gone through your posts all the way to September, before I had to make myself stop and go fix dinner! I love the closet, and think curtains would be great!

I think the closet looks great! It reminds me of the closets from The Shabby Nest .

You are giving me great ideas for the boys' rooms when we move because our closets have that same wire/hanger rack.

I think Anonymous needs to go watch Bambi 'If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all'.

Love it! Looks great with or without curtains. I like curtains for when the organized closet gets attacked by the kids.

looks great. it's a closet so no clutter would be abnormal. curtain: only i vote for a beaded one or one of those garland-like-only-vertical-if-that-makes-sense ones. I'm tired. but you know what I mean, right?

awesome transformation! i vote no curtain...there's nothing to hide in there, and you don't need the extra work :)

I did this exact thing to my girls' closet and I was so pleased with it, as I'm sure you are with yours. I wasn't pleased, though, that you could see everything, so I put up white curtains. Since I couldn't use a rod for the curtains (space wouldn't allow) I tacked them to the inside of the top of the closet and when I wanted to leave them "open" I'd gather one together and tie it in a simple knot. Then I'd do the same with the other one. This proved very effective. Good luck!

As a mom of 3 girls, 1 boy and limited storage... I feel your pain. I think your transformation is wonderful! I have 2 overly stuffed dressors. I may be the only one to say... but, I took the doors off my kids' closet and I LOVE it! It also makes me be accountable to keep it clean.

LOVE the transformation! You've inspired me to do my boys' closet. Can't wait to show my husband my inspiration!!

I put in my kids' room (Manhattan 2 bedroom apt. - had to remove the door too!) a curtain that wasn't a curtain at all- rather long grosgrain ribbons of various widths attached to a canvas strip at the top (think 60's bead curtain, but grosgrain instead). The ribbons are sewn together double-sided, and the kids can see/put their arm through any part of the closet to access anything, and it never needs moving. If you sewed it I would weight down with nickels the strips to keep them pulled straight. You could use any color at all. We love it, it always looks neat, and we don't have to worry about pulling the curtain back and forth. Enough of a visual barrier, but so easy for one or all to get to at once! Let me know if you do it or if you want pics! Good luck!

i love this! exactly what i have been searching for to organize my girls closets. question about the shelving- did you cut your own wood or did it come in those lengths/widths? same with the closet rods. did you just find these things at a home depot type store? sorry for all the questions- i just love it! thanks

We use shower curtains for our kids closet "doors". The rods fit great, the rings slide easily for little people and if they try hanging on them, they come right down. Yeah, the monkey may get bonked on the head but no serious damage and maybe they learn not to hang.

Hi. I occasionally check your blog (and copied your sucker Valentines). I was just catching up on it and saw these closet organizers. I am thinking of adding something like this for our house (we also have 5 kids and 3 bedrooms). Have you been happy with the shelves you used? Where did you get them? TIA
